Journals and Journal Rankings

Information systems, like other fields, has a variety of publishing outlets for researchers. Not all outlets have the same acceptance rates, submission rates, reviewing procedures, or editorial boards. Naturally, prestige is at least partially dependent on those factors. Journals in our field also have a variety of specificity, which is another factor that matters to some Deans and Department Heads.

Rather than have a set of "acceptable" journals imposed upon us, AIS offers these resources for its members to support their tenure and promotion cases. Several researchers have examined journal quality in our field.

Three types of journal rankings schemes that are presented here are surveys of researchers, ISI Impacts pages, and the Senior Scholars' "Basket" of top journals. AIS offers these tools to provide the necessary documentation for Deans and Department Heads. Surveys can provide a useful tool, as they reflect the opinions of many hundreds of respondents. Citation rates reflect the value of individual papers and are also very useful. However, with both schemes change seems to be rather slow. One result of this slowness is that new journals with stringent review processes and highly-respected editorial boards take too many years (perhaps decades) to ascend to their proper position on the list. The result is that one generation of researchers would work very hard to publish in the journal but not receive the deserved recognition perhaps until it is too late. The Senior Scholars' Basket of journals reflects such changes more quickly.
