Becoming Involved in Accreditation Activities

If you want to become involved in accreditation activities the best place to begin is to complete an application to become a program evaluator (PEV). You need to have an in depth understanding of academic and curricular issues and have contact with undergraduate information systems, information technology or computer science students. Additional requirements for an academic PEV are a Ph.D. in a computing discipline and hold at least the associate professor rank. The completed application is then faxed to the ACM/IEEE-CS/AIS committee members for approval. Once approved, you will be invited to attend a PEV training workshop that is usually held at one of the professional conferences. You can review the requirements, find the application, and determine the dates of the training workshops at www.csab.org. For additional questions about becoming a PEV email csab@csab.org This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .

Industry PEV requirements can be found at the same web site. Industry evaluators provide practical perspectives in the evaluation process. Preferably, an industrial PEV should have the following background: Five years of experience as a working practitioner in management information systems, information systems, information technology, computer science, or related field. Completed a master's degree with at least one degree in a computer field or computer-related or business field. Have recent contact with B.S. in MIS, IS, IT, CS graduates and experience in evaluating the graduates of B.S. in MIS, IS, IT or CS programs (e.g., recruiting, hiring, interviewing, and working with them). Other useful experiences include: one year of management experience in a computer-related discipline, experience in evaluating computing programs (e.g., industrial advisory committees, curriculum committees, undergraduate teaching experience), and/or experience in evaluating the criteria for success in a computing career (e.g., career monitoring, academic advisory activities, making hiring and promotion decisions).

Once experience is gained as a program evaluator, one may become a team chair, member of the CSAB Board or serve on the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. Information on Accredited Programs, Computing Accreditation Criteria, Procedures, and Policies, is located on the ABET web site at: http://www.abet.org/cac1.html.
